SIMBA# 2.0 Officially Released

ifak e.V. Magdeburg and inCTRL Solutions are proud to announce that SIMBA# 2.0 was officially released at ifat 2016 in Munich. It is another milestone in wastewater treatment and biogas plant modeling and has a wide array of industry-first and advanced features.

SIMBA#’s Unique Aeration Model Library
The new SIMBA# version includes our unique model library enabling users to fully dynamically simulate not only the bio-chemical processes but also aeration equipment from “blowers to bubbles”. Wastewater simulators typically focus on modeling oxygen transfer and assume that the required air can be supplied. SIMBA#’s new integrated dynamic model library integrates both the air supply system and the oxygen transfer to the bulk liquid and combines it with a state-of-the-art process model.


Some of the tasks in which SIMBA#’s new aeration model library makes the difference:
  • Design aeration systems matching oxygen requirements with air supply to a previously unknown level of detail and accuracy.
  • Design and trouble-shoot aeration control strategies with an unmatched level of detail.
  • Test how a new aeration control strategy performs under system and process constraints.
  • Identify the bottle-necks of your aeration system.
  • Select the most efficient set of equipment and test its integrated performance before the final commissioning.

Energy Tariff Model Framework
Demand response mechanisms are an increasing global trend in energy pricing and therefore must be included in the evaluation of technical solutions. In cooperation with ICRA in Girona, Spain and the UofC at Irvine, USA an extensive study of energy tariffs structures led to the development of a flexible framework for energy tariff modeling. The framework allows modeling of all charges including peak power demand penalties during a normal simulation.

Extensions to our Suite of Biofilm Reactor Models
SIMBA# 1 already provided one of the most advanced biofilm models driven by powerful numerical algorithms enabling the execution of the full model at all simulation steps. SIMBA# 2.0 now takes biofilm modeling to the next level providing reactor models for a wide range of technologies:

  • Granular sludge reactor modeling (e.g. NEREDA) using an innovative biofilm SBR reactor model.
  • Trickling filters can now be modelled with a constant water film rather than tweaking a standard model to fit the measurements.
  • Our new Membrane-Aerated Bioreactor (MABR) model allows aeration from the inner side of the biofilm, has an adaptive biofilm model that dynamically determines the biofilm thickness and diffusion path-length which is much more realistic than simplified models, and tracks the changes in oxygen concentration along the length of the membrane fibers.

Additional SIMBA# Blocks
SIMBA#’s already extensive block library has been complemented by blocks for:

  • Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) with the ability to define the fate for colloidal matter.
  • Sensor models including response time, measuring range, and noise and the option to randomly create faults for realistic testing of control strategies.
  • Blocks for random number generation.
  • A new secondary settling model using an improved Takács model (with the option to use the original model)

Improved Numerical Algorihms
The new SIMBA# 2.0 is the fastest SIMBA# ever. Driven by a new numeric library that takes full advantage of the flexibility and computing power of modern multi-processor computers, combined with improvements to the biokinetic model implementation framework, full 64 bit support, and more robust integration procedures makes SIMBA# 2.0 the best choice for all your simulation tasks including challenging biofilm and digestion modeling applications and probabilistic design challenges involving Monte Carlo simulations.

Usability Improvements
We carefully listened to our clients and introduced a number of usability improvements and new features. Examples include new plotting features such as a 2nd Y-axis or a plot copy function and streamlined procedures to set up bar graphs. All editors were updated with drag-and-drop functionality and performance improvements. Global variable handling has been redesigned and now allows handling of all global variables in one variable manager. SIMBA#’s graphical scripting environment now allows the creation of sub-systems enabling complex design procedures to be represented by a single step.
