Lord Turner’s recommendations will lead to unimaginable changes in British farming. The Soil Association is delighted that Lord Turner’s Climate Change Committee has agreed with the Soil Association recommendations that we should include the powerful greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and methane in the climate gases which have to be cut by 80% by 2050.

Farming is the largest contributor to UK methane emissions and methane accounts for 37% of UK farming’s green house gas emissions. Nitrous oxide accounts for 55% of UK farming’s green house gas emissions

Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, said:
“This report is a long-overdue but welcome recognition of the crucial role that radical changes to farming must play in the battle against global warming.

“We need to move towards organic systems of farming, where fertility is supplied from the sun’s energy not from fossil fuels. We have to stop simply turning oil into food through pesticide and GM based farming.”
