'New perspectives for the environment' - this is the theme of IFAT ENTSORGA to be held in Munich, Germany, from 13th to 17th September 2010, with water treatment and raw materials management being key focuses. Siemens is to exhibit in Hall A1 a wide range of technologies that spans the water cycle and applications, ranging from process water and industrial wastewater treatment to municipal drinking water and water transport to energy management solutions.

All over the world there is an increasing demand for drinking water and process water, but at the same time a heightened awareness of the finite nature of this essential resource. Due to rising quality requirements, communities and industries are faced with a higher cost of water, wastewater, and sludge treatment. Siemens offers modern technologies and an integrated technical approach to water treatment that help provide customers with sustainable and cost-effective operations. At IFAT ENTSORGA, the focus will be on water scarcity, energy management, and infrastructure improvement.
While world water consumption is forecast to increase 40% by 2025, raw water quality is expected to deteriorate. Nevertheless, municipal suppliers will still be required to provide consistently high-quality water. To treat this water, Siemens offers technology solutions, such as Memcor ultrafiltration products. The Memcor hollow-fiber technology effectively removes suspended solids and pathogens producing consistent, high-quality water free of suspended particulates. Memcor systems can be implemented using either a pressurized (XP and CP) or submerged (XS and CS) driving force and applied in municipal drinking water, wastewater reuse, industrial process water, and seawater desalination as pretreatment to reverse osmosis (RO).
The MemPulse membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, a water reuse technology, will be displayed at IFAT, too. The system uses a unique air-scouring process that reduces energy consumption and costs in comparison to conventional methods. The MemPulse system does not have any moving parts, which reduces the likelihood of mechanical failures and also lowers operating and maintenance costs.
Energy consumption alone accounts for about 30% of municipal water treatment operating costs. A good place to start saving costs is with fans and their drives, which consume a substantial amount of electricity. The Siemens Turbomachinery Equipment A/S will show IFAT attendees its STC-DO series of directly driven, centrifugal compressors, utilizing a high-speed motor with a shaft-mounted impeller. STC-DO compressors are especially energy efficient because they are individually adapted to customer requirements and use Dual Point Control technology. Successful energy management not only improves individual components but also links all plant components intelligently. The BioFlowsheet+ Solutions program of the Industry Solutions Division for instance, enables central wastewater processes to be integrated. The program optimizes biological processes, examining specific cost factors, such as energy consumption, labour and waste disposal.
The range of products and services for automation and low-voltage power distribution of the Siemens Divisions Drive Technologies and Industry Automation is directed toward engineering consultants, system integrators and or facility managers. Among other items, Siemens will be exhibiting innovations for optimized operational control based on Totally Integrated Automation and Totally Integrated Power with an emphasis on efficient drive technology.
Efficient water management plays a decisive role in enabling municipal operators to achieve their main goals of increasing plant capacity and maintaining a continuous water supply. The Siemens Siwa product family provides modular solutions - comprising sewerage system control, leak location, operation optimization and document management - which have been specially developed for drinking water and wastewater treatment systems. Also included are full life-cycle services, such as preventive maintenance, modernization and retrofitting. At IFAT ENTSORGA, Siemens will also provide information about special services, such as membrane cleaning and mobile water treatment systems to cover downtime and supply fluctuations.
As water consumption rises, so does the demand for complete solutions for treating sewage sludge, especially as this may account for half the expenditure in a local authority's budget. Energy requirements and disposal costs can be reduced by using modern processes. The Sludge Belt Dryer (SBD) exhibited at the show has a daily processing capacity of 8 to 200 tons of dewatered sewage sludge. Heat recovery enables it to produce a low-dust granular final product with very little extra energy input. The dried product can then be used as fuel. Additionally, Siemens offers the IPS composting system for converting dewatered sewage sludge into high-value compost products. This automated process solution combines bio filtration and odour control.
