Tensar Geogrids offer sustainable solution for trackbed stability
TENSAR International will be demonstrating the performance properties of its geogrids as a cost-effective, sustainable means of maintaining trackbed stability through ballast reinforcement at Railtex on Stand 666.
Independently proven full scale laboratory tests - and monitored site trials on the National Rail Network - have shown that Tensar geogrids increase the maintenance cycle for track over poor quality ground by a factor of about 3. Tensar geogrids have Network Rail Product Approval Certification (PA05/02516).
Tensar geogrid reinforcement has been used to stabilise the trackbed in many UK railway projects since the 1980s. In ballast stabilisation, the aggregate / geogrid interlock confines the ballast and restrains its lateral spread and vertical deformation, so helping to maintain track geometry. Use of Tensar geogrids is endorsed in Network Rail’s mandatory Technical Specification on ‘Formation Treatments’, NR/SP/TRK/9039.
Tensar geogrids are durable, oriented polypropylene grids which have high tensile stiffness at low strain, strong rib junctions and are supplied in easy to install rolls. No special plant or new skills are required for the installation which is quick and simple. As a result, they can reduce the heavy cost and inconvenience of trackbed maintenance, especially over ground with poor or variable stiffness.
Furthermore, Tensar geogrids provide increasingly important environmental benefits through efficient material usage and the minimisation of waste. The geogrid apertures interlock with, and mechanically stabilise, the ballast extending its life and resulting in less demand for quarried new material, waste disposal and transportation.
