Tetra Pak kerbside recycling reaches a quarter of all local authorities
A quarter of UK local authorities are now offering kerbside recycling collections for Tetra Pak since the scheme was introduced in Watford.
This means that now a total of 86% of all authorities offer some kind of recycling provision for the cartons whether this be at the kerbside or via bring banks.
Tetra Pak has been working with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment to improve carton recycling infrastructure.
Tetra Pak recycling operations manager Fay Dashper said: “The kerbside collections are generally part of a local authority’s wider waste management strategy.
Therefore, we see councils moving to this type of carton collection when they have a contract renewal, or move from a kerbside sorted system to a commingled system.
“By enabling cartons to be recycled through kerbside collections, these councils are now at the forefront of recycling efforts in the UK.”
Many large retailers including Sainsbury’s and Tesco have chosen to switch to Tetra Paks for some of their own brand products in recent years as a means of reducing their packaging waste, so the news that more of them can now be recycled has been welcomed.
A Local Government Association spokesman said: 'The more Tetra Paks being recycled the better. The alternative is landfill which is bad for the environment and for council tax payers. Councils are always keen to increase what can be recycled but with certain materials like Tetra Paks it isn't always economically viable.'
