The IAQ Video Network produces another educational video about chemical hazards due to vapor intrusion issues in buildings.

Phoenix, AZ, August 22nd, 2011 -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of their latest online video.  The video is about vapor intrusion and the health hazards for building occupants exposed to short and long-term exposures.

Vapor intrusion is the process by which chemicals migrate to the indoor air above a contaminated site.  Vapor intrusion generally occurs when there is movement of volatile chemicals from contaminated groundwater or soil into an overlying building.

Volatile chemicals can emit vapors that migrate through subsurface soils and into indoor air spaces of buildings in ways similar to that of radon gas seeping into homes. Volatile chemicals may include volatile organic compounds, select semi-volatile organic compounds, and some inorganic analytes, such as elemental mercury, radon and hydrogen sulfide.

In extreme cases, the vapors may accumulate in dwellings or occupied buildings to levels that may pose near-term safety hazards, acute health effects, or aesthetic problems,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.   “In buildings with low concentrations of volatile chemicals, the main concern is whether the chemicals may pose an unacceptable risk of chronic health effects due to long-term exposure to these low levels. We hope this video helps educate people about the dangers associated with vapor intrusion.”
