Viridor has submitted a revised planning application to build and operate an energy from waste facility in Ardley, near Bicester after Oxfordshire County Council refused its original proposal in October last year. (See MRW story)

Chosen as the preferred bidder in 2009 to provide a solution for Oxfordshire’s residual waste, Viridor submitted plans to build a £100 million EfW plant in on its existing landfill and recycling site in Ardley. However, the application was refused by the council despite an approval recommendation from planning officers.

The new planning bid stresses the need for the facility and addresses issues raised previously by local stakeholders.

Viridor  project manager Robert Ryan said: “We are making it clearer how urgent the need is for a residual waste treatment facility for Oxfordshire, very much in line with national, regional and local waste strategies and planning policies.

“Recently published information by the Health Protection Agency should also reassure local residents and elected representatives of the safety of well-managed and modern EfW plants.”

The EfW facility will process up to 300,000 tonnes of residual waste, generating 24MW of electricity. Viridor has highlighted the importance of the energy produced by the facility and how this fits into policy regarding low carbon energy generation.
