Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) use the CUP-TWL pump as the Turbine-Driven Auxiliary Feed Water (TDAFW) pump, and in Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) as the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling (RCIC) pump. The ClydeUnion Pumps technology offers substantial advantages; does not require AC or DC power; can pump hot process fluids (>100 degrees C); does not utilize flammable lubrication; has excellent transitory response; and, a smaller footprint and fewer parts are required.

The CUP-TWL pump makes it possible for a plant to achieve system operation without supporting AC or DC electrical power, disassembling equipment or making emergency modifications. This capability is critical for plants that require extended coping duration for loss of AC power. Westinghouse also can provide a complete package of permanent hardware and system modifications to allow local, manual operation.
Originally developed for maritime applications, the CUP-TWL pump has undergone full nuclear quality assurance, since it is considered a safety-related pump for both PWRs and BWRs. Additionally, the pump carries several accreditations, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) “N” stamp.
Nuclear power plants currently using the CUP-TWL pump include PWRs in the U.K., Sweden, Republic of Korea and China, and BWRs in Taiwan. More than 400 pump units currently are being used in both nuclear and non-nuclear services worldwide.
