Automated Handling of Activated Carbon in Bulk Bags Reduces Dust and Labor for Municipal WTPs
Two cities, one in the United States and the other in Canada, over 700 miles (1100 km) apart, were experiencing nearly identical problems caused by manual addition of powdered activated carbon to their municipal water treatment systems. Both cities not only eliminated a health hazard caused by carbon powder dust, but also reduced the amount of labor required to add powdered activated carbon to the system by installing a bulk bag unloading system.
At both facilities, installation of an automated ... |

Removing mercury with activated carbon
Granular Activated carbon is effective at physically adsorbing trace components from gas streams due to its high population of micropores; however, the capacity is low. By impregnating the granular activated carbon with a compound that will chemically react with the mercury, capacity can be enhanced. It is imperative that not only must the mercury be removed to non-detectable levels but that it is adsorbed in a form which will not elute from the activated carbon bed under fluctuating conditions. |

SnowPure Water Technologies- Electrodeionization for Power Plants - The Importance of Silica
Power plants use high purity water to drive steam turbines. Cogeneration plants are highly efficient, using both exhaust turbines and high pressure steam turbines. In the 1960's, boilers operated at 450C (840F) and 4MPa (40 atmospheres). Today's leading edge boilers operate at 620C (1150F) and 30MPa (300 atmospheres). To keep power efficiency high, maximize uptime, and minimize turbine maintenance, boiler makeup water must be ultrapure (17+ Megohm.cm) and have very little silica (SiO2). Silica levels required are in the range of 5-20 ppb, depending on the boiler pressure. Under the boiler/turbine conditions, dissolved silica will form a glass on surfaces like the turbine blades.
