GCL stands for Geosynthetic Clay Liner, a geomembrane which incorporates bentonite, an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate which swells on contact with water. A typical GCL construction consists of two layers of geosynthetic textiles stitched together enclosing a layer of bentonite.
