You will have the opportunity to interact with other groundwater professionals, meet state and regional regulators and resource managers, compare characterization techniques and remedial solutions, and explore policy initiatives regarding the fractured rock environment — one of the most challenging geologic environments to characterize and remediate — during this two-day conference. As fractured rock aquifers serve as the primary source of groundwater for many areas of the world, keeping up with evolving science and developing technologies that provide a better understanding of the physical and chemical nature of these systems, as well as the fate and transport of both natural and anthropogenic contaminants, is necessary. In addition, the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Atlantic regions face the challenge of providing sufficient water supplies to meet public primary and secondary demands. This quest is ongoing and focuses on protecting existing groundwater supplies while developing alternative ones. This conference will address the roles of science, technology, and policy to achieve these goals. The conference will also feature a panel on the challenges of effective remediation in fractured rock.
