Report: EU attempts to salvage Kyoto Protocol
The EU is reportedly working on a compromise package of proposals designed to end the deadlock between developing and industrialised nations over the future of the Kyoto Protocol. A senior EU official told influential newswire Point Carbon News that diplomats are working on a plan that would see Kyoto extended beyond its current expiration date of 2012, on the understanding that it is then allowed to lapse in 2018 to be replaced by a new global pact. Truckers lead fresh protest against Australian carbon tax
The row over the Australian government`s plans to impose a carbon tax on large emitters escalated again today as a convoy of truckers encircled the country`s parliament as part of a protest calling for an early election. Organisers of the self-styled "convoy of no confidence" claimed that around 10,000 people gathered for the protest, arguing that with opinion polls showing majority opposition to the proposed carbon tax and the minority Labour government reliant on independent and Green votes an early election should be called.
