Canadian energy start up at centre of U.S. oil sands fight
A Calgary-based energy startup company with an innovative new technology for oil sands development is at the center of a controversy over plans to launch the first significant U.S. oil sands project.
Earth Energy Resources Inc. has obtained government permits to open the first U.S. oil sands surface mine designed for producing bitumen from a 62-acre pit in eastern Utah that was used for decades as a source of asphalt. No one has sought to produce petroleum from the site on the scale planned by Earth Energy.
