Scotland`s largest AD facility granted planning permission
Scotland’s largest anaerobic digestion (AD) facility has been given the green light by West Lothian’s planning committee.  The facility, which will be capable of handling around 105,000 tonnes of waste each year, is the second AD facility in the pipeline claiming to be Scotland’s largest. Plans for another facility in North Ayrshire, financed by energy firm Scottish Southern Energy and Zero Waste Scotland, were announced recently (see MRW story). European Commission vows to lead biowaste crackdown
The European Commission last week called for existing legislation and targets governing the management of biodegradable waste to be "rigorously enforced", with the release of a new report arguing that existing policies have the potential to slash greenhouse gas emissions from landfill and drive rapid adoption of waste-to-energy technologies.  A number of trade associations, including the Association for Organics Recycling, had been calling for the creation of a dedicated Biowaste Directive to encourage better management of biodegradable waste streams.  But the report, entitled Communication ...
