Researchers warn algae biofuels could prove worse than existing alternatives
For years algae-based biofuels have been regarded as the Holy Grail for transport industries, a means of producing low carbon fuel on an industrial scale without impacting food supplies while also paving the way for a genuinely sustainable aviation industry. But now algae-based biofuels have finally found a detractor in the form of a team of researchers at the University of Virginia who this week published a new study suggesting biofuels made from algae could end up emitting more greenhouse gases conventional crop-based biofuels. US wind energy industry enjoys record 2009
Wind power projects in the US enjoyed unprecedented growth in 2009, according to new figures from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) that show total wind energy capacity grew 39 per cent last year. However, the Association warned that some of the economic benefits associated with this rapid scaling up of wind energy were being lost as a result of insufficient government support for the country`s fledgling turbine manufacturing industry.
