World Bank moves to put price on ecosystems
The World Bank has today launched a wide-ranging programme aimed at encouraging countries to value ecosystems in the same manner as GDP. Unveiled at that UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan, the five-year pilot programme will aim to develop mechanisms for integrating ecosystem valuation into national accounts. The project, which has already secured backing from India, Mexico and the UK, will also look at how the resulting best practices can be applied around the world.
