New Report: College sports tackling sustainability
As college campuses prepare for the new school year, a new report by the Natural Resources Defense Council examines the innovative sustainability efforts at collegiate sports departments across the country. Over 200 college sports programs, including leaders from the Big Ten, Pac-12, Ivy League, and SEC athletics conferences, are now prioritizing greener practices such as installing solar panels, undergoing energy efficiency audits and water conservation upgrades, and collecting recycling and composting at games. “College athletics and recreation programs are leading the sustainability ...
How ‘green’ is our food?
New research from Cranfield University has analysed how ‘green’ some of our everyday food choices are, and their long term sustainability for UK diets. The team of scientists compared three types of carbohydrates commonly consumed in Great Britain – British grown potatoes, Italian pasta and Indian basmati rice – in terms of both greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) and water use impacts. The research looked at the three foodstuffs from the farm up to delivery to the retailer. Basmati rice comes in third place with the highest GHGE and the highest impact on water use, which ...
Innovative Fan Noise Control - no silencers, reduced power consumption
New technology developed by the INVC reduced the noise from a 2 storey ID fan at the 50MW Schiller biomass power station in the USA by 90% at a fraction of the cost of conventional silencing. Remarkably, the fan power consumption was also reduced. The technology is based on the design of aerodynamic aids that reduce the noise at source inside the fan casing and is applicable to centrifugal fans of all sizes. Maintenance free, you can often also dispense with acoustic enclosures and lagging – and dispense with the reduction in fan efficiency often associated with traditional silencers.
