Groundwater is contained in rocks that are known as aquifers. Aided by gravity, the water fills the aquifer from the bottom upwards. The lower part of the aquifer has spaces that are completely filled by water. These are termed as the `saturated zone` of the aquifer. In the top part of the aquifer, the rock spaces contain air as well as water. This part of the aquifer is called `unsaturated`. ‘Water table` is the margin that can be marked where the aquifer changes from the unsaturated zone to the saturated one.
