Quality of harvested rainwater unsufficient for drinking
A study published in the Journal of Water and Health has examined microbial contamination of harvested rainwater in the Netherlands. The water did not comply with Dutch drinking water legislation and factors affecting contamination were found to include storage, roof and environmental conditions. In remote and rural areas where access to tap water is limited, rainwater harvesting is common practice. However, rainwater harvesting is also increasing in areas which have easy access to tap water. Nanoparticles decontaminate groundwater
Since their invention a decade ago at Lehigh University, iron nanoparticles 1,000 times thinner than a human hair have demonstrated an unprecedented ability to clean contaminated groundwater. The palladium-coated particles have remediated more than 50 toxic waste sites in the US and other countries in 10 times faster than traditional pump-and-treat methods.
