Canada`s oil-sands – a new look and a fresh perspective
In what may stand as a new datum point on reporting the environmental impacts of Canada`s oil sands industry, a panel of top scientists has reported that claims about the health and environmental effects of oil-sands development in northern Alberta may be exaggerated. The group has also identified weakness in monitoring of developments in the oil patch and noted there is inadequate evidence to support some of the claims being made about remediation technologies now in place. Coal Tar Sealant Largest Source of PAHs in Lakes
Coal-tar-based pavement sealant is the largest source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in 40 urban lakes studied by the U.S. Geological Survey. PAHs are an environmental health concern because several are probable human carcinogens, they are toxic to fish and other aquatic life, and their concentrations have been increasing in urban lakes in recent decades. Coal-tar-based pavement sealant is the black, shiny substance sprayed or painted on many parking lots, driveways, and playgrounds.
