Predicting the fate of underground carbon
A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a new modeling methodology for determining the capacity and assessing the risks of leakage of potential underground carbon-dioxide reservoirs. One strategy for mitigating greenhouse gases is to inject compressed carbon dioxide into natural aquifers made of permeable rock soaked with brackish salt water. Carbon dioxide is less viscous and less dense than the water, and, once injected, it rises to the top of the aquifer. The permeable rock usually lies underneath a dense, impermeable `cap rock,` that traps the gas ...
Groundwater experts meet to tackle future management challenges
The Parliamentary Secretary for Water, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, has opened the National Water Commission`s inaugural national Groundwater Forum, which has brought together 120 of Australia`s leading groundwater experts to discuss the challenges in managing the nation`s groundwater and the associated reform actions agreed under the National Water Initiative. Dr Kelly said, `Groundwater is a significant resource that is relied on by a large number of Australians. Although it makes up approximately 17% of Australia`s accessible water resources, groundwater accounts for over 30% of our total ...

“Since 1942, AMS, Inc. has been a leading provider of the highest quality sampling equipment available for environmental, geotechnical, and remediation activities as well as for soil, soil gas, and groundwater monitoring and testing. AMS, Inc. manufactures hand augers, soil probes, core samplers, sludge and sediment samplers, gas vapor probes, and since 1994, AMS PowerProbes — direct-push drilling rigs. AMS PowerProbes can be mounted on pick-up trucks, tracks, or trailers, and have gained widespread acceptance due to their versatility, relatively low cost, and ease of mobility. They are designed to be used for remediation investigations, geophysical and geotechnical tests, installing monitoring wells, and most models can be fitted with hollowstem augering capability.”
