Billions to be gained from sewers
Although wastewater sewage sludge is usually considered an expensive nuisance to be disposed of, it can actually be a source of energy, phosphorus and other products. Water treatment facilities are currently exploring technologies to extract this value. Research shows that the potential of recovery grows from USD25 billion today to USD45 billion in 2020. Study dispersant use and ecosystem impacts of dispersed oil
Last Thursday, over fifty experts and practitioners from government, academia and industry finished a two-day meeting looking at the potential long-term impacts of the prolonged use of large volumes of dispersants in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. EPA and NOAA scientists are conducting rigorous ongoing monitoring and analysis of the effectiveness and toxicity of the dispersants used.
