Hypoxia Task Force Launches New Monitoring Efforts to Track Water Quality Improvements
The Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient (Hypoxia) Task Force announced today that it is launching two new efforts to monitor reductions in nutrients – nitrogen and phosphorus – throughout the watershed. Oil Skimmer-Baltimore Slaughterhouse Uses Oil Skimmer to Meet Wastewater Regulations
As a kosher slaughterhouse based in Baltimore County, M.D., J.W. Treuth & Sons uses 25,000 gallons of water per day to butcher cattle. Fats are a naturally abundant by-product of the ritualized slaughter, but if left in wastewater, they can cause contamination of public sewer systems. Vernon Treuth Sr.  said he started looking for a way to reduce the fats, oils, and greases (FOG) in kill-floor run-off after receiving three letters of violation from the state.
