Footloose glaciers crack up
Glaciers that lose their footing on the seafloor and begin floating behave very erratically, according to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Floating glaciers produce larger icebergs than their grounded cousins and do so at unpredictable intervals. This study presents the first detailed observation of the transition from grounded to floating glaciers, which is currently ongoing at Columbia Glacier, one of Alaska"s many tidewater glaciers. Cost of waterborne diseases
Hospitalisations for three common waterborne diseases cost the healthcare system as much as USD539 million annually. Research presented last week at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases, held in Atlanta (GA, USA) revealed the cost of Legionnaires" disease, cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis to patients and insurers. "These cost data highlight that water-related diseases pose not only a physical burden to the thousands of people sickened by them each year, but also a substantial burden in healthcare costs, including direct government payments through Medicare and Medicaid", ... |
