Nanotech meeting poor`s water needs
When the economist Fritz Schumacher coined the phrase `small is beautiful` more than 30 years ago, he was hoping to promote `intermediate technologies` that focus on local techniques, knowledge and materials, rather than high-tech solutions to problems facing the world`s poor, writes David Dickson on SciDev.net.
More recently, the phrase has taken on a different meaning as scientists and engineers develop nanotechnology - processes to control matter at an atomic or molecular level - and show that this field, too, can promote sustainable development.

ADB President says sustained water sector investment can help fuel growth
Governments in Asia and the Pacific must continue to invest in water infrastructure in spite of the economic crisis or face fundamental threats to their economic growth and social development, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda said this week.
Speaking at the opening of the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2009, Mr. Kuroda expressed concern that national and municipal governments would react to the economic crisis by cutting or postponing infrastructure investments, particularly in the water and wastewater management sector.

Filtralite (maxit as)
maxit a.s, Norway has signed a contract with Atal Engineering Ltd. in Hong Kong for delivery of Filtralite filter media to the Karamay Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Xinjiang province, China. The ordered volume is about 10.000 tonnes and the delivery will take place during 2009. The Karamay Wastewater Treatment Plant is for a petrochemical industry in the city of Karamay. The flow of the plant is 50.000 m3/day and the water is coming from the petrochemical plant. After the water has been treated it is released into the river Mahe Ku Dao. The process installed consists of a primary sedimentation followed by BAF (Biological Aerated Filtration) process where the Filtralite material is installed.
