LA water rationing in the pipeline
Businesses in Los Angeles are bracing themselves for water rationing measures after the city`s Department of Water and Power (DWP) this week signalled it could impose caps on water use as part of efforts to tackle California`s three-year drought. Under the plan, which has been adopted in principle by the Department`s board and will be formally voted on next month, homes and businesses would pay a penalty rate of almost double normal prices for any water they use over and above their monthly allowance. Oasys Water secures US$10m in funding
Desalination technology firm Oasys Water has scooped US$10m (GBP 6.9m) in Series A funding to develop what it says will be an ultra-cheap means of removing salt from water. The company, which uses technology developed at Yale University, will use the money to further develop commercial systems that reduce the electricity needed to desalinate water, according to officials. It is hoped that the technology will also be used to create fresh drinking water from other sources such as waste water.
