Strongly bonds to heavy metals which then precipitate as less soluble less toxic metal sulfides. Chrome (VI) is reduced to chrome (III) which then precipitates as a hydroxide. This versatile aqueous multivalent-ion/sulfur chemistry has been well-studied and successfully applied at many remediation sites over the past 40 years. It has proven more stable and persistent in subsurface environments than other reductants such as sodium dithionite, and is relatively safe to handle in the field.
