We work to set up integrated biorefineries in local areas, while maintaining their biodiversity and in partnership with farmers The cornerstone of our bioeconomy model, understood as territorial regeneration, is the biorefinery integrated in the local area. Biorefineries integrated in local areas are primarily dedicated to the production of bioplastics and biochemicals from renewable sources with the aim of setting up innovative agroindustries in local areas, while maintaining their biodiversity, with a cascade approach in the use of biomass and in partnership with the various industry players.

Biorefineries can play an important role for innovation and local growth. They integrate an increasingly wide range of proprietary technologies used for the reconversion of industrial sites that are decommissioned or are no longer competitive and are based on an approach of close multidisciplinary collaboration with the world of agriculture, research and local establishments.

A raw materials approach: respect for biodiversity and resource efficiency
Biorefineries use various local raw materials (low-input crops, waste, etc.) with full respect for local biodiversity. An essential component of our research activity is the identification of autochthonous crops which can be cultivated in marginal and non-irrigated lands, thus making the most of the specific features of the land and increasing the fertility of the soil, while at the same time maximising the use of waste and residues as valuable sources of raw materials for the biorefinery.

For us it is already a reality
In NOVAMONT we promote the development of a bioeconomy model based on the efficient use of renewable resources and on the regeneration of local areas.

For us, the regeneration of local areas means starting out from local areas and developing new proprietary technologies to rejuvenate industrial sites that are decommissioned or are no longer competitive, thus generating new industries, new products and new jobs.

The following are the cornerstones that distinguish our bioeconomy model:

  • Reconversion of industrial sites that are decommissioned or are no longer competitive to create innovative biorefineries integrated in the local areas, transforming local problems into development opportunities.
  • Promotion of a circular economy rethinking the traditional model of production-consumption-disposal of products with a system-based approach, that is, starting with renewable raw materials to produce manufactured goods which at the end of their lives will be converted into a new resource.
  • Creation of bridges and interconnections between sectors, to incentivise cooperation and synergies between various stakeholders towards common objectives, starting with the profitable utilisation of the specific nature of the local areas.
