- Model 747 Family - Commercial Airplane

The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and Freighter are state-of-the-art, high-capacity 747s that offer airlines the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large passenger or freighter airplane-while providing enhanced environmental performance.

This modern family of 747 jetliners meets airline requirements to capture growth on high-density slot-constrained routes. The 747-8 Intercontinental serves the 400 to 500 seat market, which is thoughtfully positioned between the 555-seat Airbus A380 and the 386-seat Boeing 777-300 Extended Range airplanes. The 747-8 Freighter continues to lead the world cargo market with its unmatched capacity and capability.

Boeing studied the market feasibility of a new 747 for some time, working with operators to establish their requirements for an incrementally larger 747 to continue the profitability that they established and enjoyed with their current 747 fleets. By working together with customers and applying the innovative new technologies of the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing created the 747-8 family. In fact, the designation 747-8 was chosen to show the technology connection between the 787 and the new 747-8.

The 747-8 is a new airplane with new engines, new wings and a dramatically enhanced passenger experience. With 51 additional seats and 26% more revenue cargo volume than the 747-400, the Intercontinental was designed for the heart of the premium market offering more range, more payload and more fuel efficiency than any previous 747. The 747-8 Intercontinental also has unique passenger seating areas that offer a level of spaciousness that no other airplane in the world can offer.

The cabin's sculpted ceilings, bigger overhead and side stow bins and dynamic LED lighting all add to an overall more comfortable passenger experience. The forward zone First Class cabin is exclusive, quiet, has no walk through traffic and is preferred by premium passengers. The uniquely-exclusive upper deck feels like being on your own private jet. For six consecutive years, passengers have shown overwhelming preference to the 'Queen of the Skies' award-winning unique brand of style and elegance. It was built to maximize value, build premium customer loyalty and bring back the majesty of flight.

The 747-8 is cleaner, quieter and emits less greenhouse gases than any other 747. As of February 2013, the 747-8 is approved to fly into 225 destination airports and 160 alternate airports. The 747-8 Intercontinental has offers superior economics that airlines will appreciate, a high fidelity flight deck pilots will love and an unmatched flight experience that passengers will remember. The 747-8 has a cutting edge, state-of-the-art wing that features raked wingtips, an advanced technology airfoil, fly-by-wire spoilers and outboard ailerons, double-slotted flaps inboard and single-slotted outboard flaps. It has the newest GEnx-2B engines -- allowing for 30% smaller noise footprint, 15% reduction in-service carbon emissions, better performance retention, lower weight, less fuel consumption, fewer parts and less maintenance.

The 747-8 Intercontinental plays beautifully alongside the 777 and 787, fitting easily into existing networks as either a large people mover or as a premium high-density airplane. The new 747-8 also improves network profitability on premium, dense/slot constrained and peak-time departure routes. A low impact 3-day differences course enables a seamless transition from a 747-400 to the 747-8. In-service, the 747-8 will have a 15% fuel efficiency advantage over the 747-400.

Compared one on one, the 747-8 Freighter has no competitors. With a maximum structural payload capacity of 146 tons (133 tonnes), including tare weight, the 747-8 Freighter offers 16 percent more revenue cargo volume than the 747-400 Freighter. The additional 4,221 cubic feet (120 m3) of volume means the airplane can accommodate four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets. The 747-8 Freighter enables operators to choose between carrying greater revenue payload-up to an additional 22 tons (20 tonnes). The airplane upholds its predecessor's legendary efficiency, with nearly equivalent trip costs and lower ton-mile costs. In fact, the 747-8 Freighter will enjoy the lowest ton-mile costs of any freighter, giving operators unmatched profit potential.

The 747-8 is the right size for the large airplane market, lowering risk for airlines in a highly variable operating environment.
