Newterra - Chemical Wastewater Treatment Systems
newterra chemical treatment systems are custom designed for the specific application and flow volume to be addressed. We draw on a range of chemical wastewater treatment processes including pH adjustment for the neutralization of the water stream, coagulation/flocculation for facilitating the removal of suspended solids and heavy metals, and precipitation and clarification for removing sludge. include ion exchange, water softening, chemical stabilization, and disinfection.
Solids/Water Separation
The final stage of chemical treatment includes the separation of solids and flocs from the water. Depending upon the characteristics of the solids/flocs, sludge and clean water can be separated using:
Slant Plate Clarifiers use gravity settlings, the most energy efficient solids/water separation technique. Slant plates are used to decrease the distance a particle has to fall before it hits a surface. The flow rate of the clarifier is based on a number of factors, including particle density, surface area, fall rate, loading and temperature.
Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) are incorporated when the sludge is less dense than water, or is neutrally buoyant. DAF uses billions of micro-bubbles that attach themselves to the flocs and carry them to the surface. These bubbles, known as “whitewater”, are removed by a mechanical skimmer within the DAF unit that skims away floating sludge.
Other Sludge Removal Options: When the sludge produced by coagulation/flocculation treatment does not need to be preserved, and consists of very sensitive flocs, newterra designs supplement the system with higher filtration technologies, such as bag filters and cartridge filters, self-indexing filters, screw presses and filter presses. If further polishing is required following sludge/water separation, water can be pumped into vessels with specialty media or activated carbon.
Coagulation/Flocculation
These processes play a central role in many water and wastewater technologies by facilitating the removal of suspended solids and colloidal particles. This is achieved through the addition of organic or inorganic chemical reagents called coagulants and flocculants. Coagulants neutralize the repulsive electrical charges (typically negative) surrounding suspended or colloidal particles, allowing them to stick together and create clumps or “flocs”. Flocculants support the agglomeration or aggregation of the coagulated particles into larger floccules.
pH Adjustment and Control
These are basic procedures within any chemical treatment technology and are performed automatically, using either acids or bases, as appropriate. pH is a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions (H+) in water, and therefore also a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water. pH adjustment permits the neutralization of water to protect downstream equipment or prior to disposal. It makes downstream precipitation and coagulation processes more efficient. See more in our Filtration section.

Each application for chemical treatment systems requires a thorough analysis of the type and level of contamination, the water flow rate, and the discharge quality requirements. Following design and construction, newterra also performs comprehensive, on-site pilot testing.
