Climate - Model BPI - Bi-Polar Ionization Unit
Bipolar ionization (BPI) is one proven technology that cleans air in much the same way that nature eliminates contaminants from the outdoor air. First used commercially in the food industry in 1972, BPI generators produce ions that react with oxygen and water vapor to create free hydroxyl radicals, which are extremely reactive and very effective in combating airborne pollutants. These free radicals, like those formed naturally in the outside air, chemically convert airborne contaminants into benign gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor. They oxidize hydrocarbons, including the greenhouse gas methane and emissions from industry and transport, break down VOCs to reduce odors. The hydroxyl radicals can damage virtually all types of macromolecules including nucleic acids (DNA) making it a very dangerous compound to microorganisms (i.e. bacteria, viruses, and mold).
This process mimics what happens in nature where free hydroxyl radicals are a key part of the self-cleaning capacity of the atmosphere, the 'detergent of the troposphere'.
BPI is a cost-effective solution to deliver a healthier, more pleasing indoor environment. Furthermore, designers of the HVAC system may be able to reduce the amount of the outside air ventilation load while maintaining or actually improving indoor air quality, leading to significant heating and cooling energy cost savings.
