Dewasting Technologies
Several dewasting technologies including methanol rectification is planned for multiple facilities to recover methanol and reduce the oxygen demand of the distillate. The effluent from distillation and/or crystallization processes will be fed into a rectification column, which is operated at atmospheric pressure and heated with steam in a re-boiler located separate from the column. The sump product of the column is the water condensate which can be recycled or treated further allowing discharge.

The Membrane Biological Reactor/Reverse Osmosis (MBR/RO) system [Patent Pending] being constructed at the Standing Stone facility will allow Eureka to further treat the distilled water produced by distillers or crystallizers (and possibly methanol rectification) using biological treatment processes similar to those that are typically used at most municipal wastewater treatment plants. The MBR system is designed to provide biological removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia in the distilled water feed. The RO system is used as a polishing step downstream of the MBR system to remove residual ammonia nitrogen, bromide and other constituents that may be in the MBR effluent allowing direct discharge or unrestricted reuse.
