The CAL3K-AP calorimeter system introduces new features including :
- Waterless System (no water required, making the system easier to use)
- Allows for the use of one of three operating modes : Isothermal, Adiabatic or Isobatic.
- Automatic Oxygen Filling and de-filling of the reaction vessel
- More Advanced Features
The CAL3K-AP is a cost-effective calorimeter system which requires little to no maintenance and features a built-in subject/self help function.
The main focus of DDS is the manufacture of oxygen bomb calorimeters and combustion vessels used in laboratories worldwide. The aim is to manufacture quality, cost-competitive analytical equipment suited for various applications. Agents are trained and equipped to give our customers the best technical support for each calorimeter system.
The CAL3K-AP is designed for laboratories that require a high throughput (at approximately 10 samples per hour). The improved air cooler allows for cooling to ambient temperature and automatic oxygen filling removes the need for a separate filling station. The bomb vessel (bayonet, self-locking and sealing) is completely removable. The CAL3K PC software allows the user to read and set parameters, read and set sample and group identifications, set keyboard accessibility (password protection), retrieving results, retrieving events and monitoring the CAL3K operation.
The Eco-friendly design of the CAL3K means that it has a smaller carbon footprint, requires no water, and has a lower power consumption.
The new CAL3K system supports the software based laboratory and information management system (LIMS). This software offers a set of key features that supports modern laboratory operations.
Consumable counting features the counting of firing wire and o-rings and alerts the operator when a preset limit is reached. The operator is then alerted to change the relevant calorimeter and vessel consumables.
Introducing Isobatic Combining Isothermal, Adiabatic and Isobatic Calorimetry Methods in one system. The water bucket method has one big advantage : It requires not engineering. We, at dds, have replaced the water with an aluminium sleeve pressed over the steel cylinder and we have placed the temperature sensors in a cavity between the steel cylinder and the sleeve. No water! No stirrer! The outside of the vessel is now equivalent to the outside of the bucket. This leads to the following considerations :
- Water is a very poor heat conductor. It is approximately 350 times worse than aluminium. The stirrer is increasing the conductivity to the temperature sensor, but it adds energy to the bucket.
- The water quantity in the bucket must be measured precisely.
- The heat capacity of water is approximately 4 times higher than that of aluminium. This property and the large water volume results in approximately 4 times less temperature increase per released energy.
- Once a determination is done the warm water can be discarded easily.
- If a water cooler is used then the water is recycled.
- A large engineering effort is required to place the temperature measuring electronics into a cavity between the stainless steel cylinder and the aluminium sleeve.
- The cost of a water apparatus consists of a bucket, stirrer, and water quantity/weight measuring compared to an aluminium sleeve is excessive.
- The water has one advantage : it equalizes the temperature (gradients). To minimize this effect we have placed 4 temperature sensors around the steel cylinder.
The DDS CAL3K range is used to determine the calorific values of liquid and solid samples. The range of CAL3K oxygen bomb calorimeters is manufactured to be used with various applications; coal analysis and oil analysis being the most popular applications.
The latest addition to the DDS Scientific range is the CAL3K-AP advanced bomb calorimeter, which combines the Isothermal and Adiabatic methods in one system. We call this new method Isobatic.
DDS has been designing and manufacturing high precision oxygen bomb calorimeter for over 40 years. The DDS Calorimeters are easy to set up, with easy removable connections, making the system compact, lightweight and easy to move.
The calorific value of any solid or liquid material that can be burned safely in an oxygen bomb can be determined using a CAL3K machine. All our bomb calorimeters are supplied with one or more bomb vessels and the required installation kits (firing cotton, firing wire, benzoic acid tablets, consumables, etc.) The complete CAL3K-AP system also includes an air cooler to cool the vessel after a determination.
The CAL3K range of oxygen bomb calorimeters comprises of : a CAL3K calorimeter with automatic filling, a waterless system with external air cooler, Windows based software, printer connection, balance connections and LIMS integration. DDS oxygen calorimeters offer high performance and low maintenance at a competitive and affordable price.
The CAL3K can be applied in the coal, petrochemical, medical research, cement, power generation and animal feed research industries. The CAL3K can also be used to analyze coal, coke, oil, foodstuff and biomass products and is applied in power plants, coal mines, metallurgy, the chemical industry, for commercial inspection and scientific research.
The use of multiple bomb vessels minimizes the down-time by preparing the second bomb and sample while the current sample is being analyzed. Up to 10 bomb vessels can be prepared and used in the system with routine sample determination. We recommend a minimum of 2 bomb vessels per system.
The CAL3K range makes is possible to achieve a 5-6 minute operator time per test without compromising its accuracy or precision.
External Cooling System (CAL3K Air Cooler) - After numerous determinations/sample analysis the vessel temperature rises and needs to be cooled for the next sample analysis. The external air cooler ensures that the vessel temperature is lowered or cooled to ambient temperature to minimize influence.
Convenient Waterless System - The oxygen calorimeter is operated without water. No measuring, spilling or leaking. The calorimeter is ready to use without needing to fill it with water, reducing sample preparation time.
Bomb calorimeters are designed and manufactured to endure and sustain large pressure inside the calorimeter chamber as the reaction has to be measured simultaneously. The sample is ignited with electrical energy during the firing process. During this process the vessel is heated from the combustion process.
A bomb calorimeter basically consists of a cup (crucible) to hold the sample, oxygen, a stainless steel bomb vessel, the insulating container (to prevent heat flow from the calorimeter to the surroundings; the polystyrene acts as the insulating container in the CAL3K), water (the CAL3K is waterless), and an ignition system connected to the bomb for igniting the sample.
The CAL3K features a micro-processor based bomb vessel with automatic measurement of the calorific value of the sample, a clear LCD display, printer connection, connection to a standard keyboard, user interaction prompts, on-screen subject help, memory storage for data, real time clock, Windows PC Software for recording and viewing data, and full LIMS support. The CAL3K uses the Adiabatic, Isothermal and Dynamic working methods and includes automatic oxygen filling and degassing of the oxygen bomb vessel.
