Stingray 2.0 is a compact, battery-powered logger with an ultrasonic sensor. It data logs level, velocity and water temperature readings for flow monitoring through open channels, partially full sewer pipes and surcharged pipes. Use it for flow surveys, I&I studies, stormwater, irrigation water and sewage.
Product Overview
Stingray uses a submerged ultrasonic sensor to continuously measure both Velocity and Level in the channel. The sensor is a completely sealed ultrasonic unit with no orifices or ports. It mounts inside the pipe or at the bottom of a rectangular channel. No special compounds, tools or hardware are required.

Hydrodynamic Ultrasonic Sensor
Stingray 2.0 uses a submerged ultrasonic sensor to continuously measure both velocity and level in the channel. The sensor is a completely sealed ultrasonic unit with no orifices or ports. It is hydrodynamically shaped and designed to shed deposits and stringers for reliable operation in sewage, stormwater and stream flow applications. The QZ02L sensor mounts inside the pipe or at the bottom of an open channel. No special compounds, tools or hardware are required. A stainless steel mounting bracket is included.

Stingray 2.0 Confidence Display
You can check operation with the built-in LCD bar graph display. It scrolls through level, velocity and temperature readings, plus remaining battery and logger storage capacity. The display turns off automatically after 60 seconds to conserve battery power.
Greyline Pipe Band Sensor Mounting for Area-Velocity Flow Surveys
Do it the easy way - use a stainless steel pipe band for Stingray sensor mounting. You can install the sensor and tie wrap the cable in place before you enter the manhole. Then insert the pipe band into the manhole inlet pipe and tighten the scissor-jack to expand the band for a friction fit inside the pipe.
Pipe Mounting Bands are available from Greyline in a range of sizes for common pipe diameters.

Built-in Display for Operator Confidence
Check Stingray status and performance without connecting to your laptop. Press the display button and the Stingray scrolls through bar graph displays of level, velocity and temperature readings, plus remaining battery and logger storage capacity.
Operators can use the LCD display to check performance at start-up and confirm Stingray readings and signal strength at any time during operation. The display powers off after 60 seconds to conserve battery power.
Greyline Logger Software
Powerful Windows software is included free with each Stingray. Use it to set the logger interval, to download log files and view Level, Velocity and water temperature readings in real-time.
Greyline Logger will display log files and flow rates in graph and table formats. It will generate flow reports including minimum, maximum and average flow, calculate flow totals, and convert between common measurement units.
Reporting is easy with Greyline Logger - you can export charts as image files and export data to use in spreadsheet or database programs.

Easy to Operate
No calibration is required. Just install the sensor at the bottom of the pipe or channel and the Stingray logs level and velocity readings. Use Greyline Logger software (included) to set the logging interval, and to view readings in real-time on your laptop or PC. Stingray's built-in LCD display lets operators check level and velocity rates, remaining battery life and logger memory.
Efficient, Battery Powered
With 4 standard Alkaline D-cells the Stingray will operate and datalog for extended time periods. (For example: logging at 5 minute intervals the Stingray batteries will last for 12 months and store over 105,000 separate level, velocity and temperature readings!)
How it Works
The sensor transmits ultrasonic pulses that travel through the water and reflect off the liquid surface. To monitor water level, the Stingray precisely measures the time it takes for echoes to return to the sensor.
Velocity is measured with an ultrasonic signal continuously injected into the flow. This high frequency sound is reflected back to the sensor from particles or bubbles suspended in the liquid. If the fluid is in motion, the echoes return at an altered frequency proportionate to flow velocity. The Stingray uses this Doppler frequency shift to accurately calculate flow velocity.
Level-Velocity Logger Specifications
SCOPE: This specification covers a portable Level-Velocity Logger as manufactured by Greyline Instruments, Massena, New York / Long Sault, Ontario. The instrument shall provide for measurement and data logging of level, velocity and temperature readings from flow in open channels and partially filled or surcharged pipes.
General
- Level-Velocity Logger to consist of a submersible ultrasonic sensor, connecting cable, and a remote enclosure with electronics and display. System shall have no moving parts.
- Level measurement accuracy shall be ±0.25% of Level. Velocity measurement accuracy shall be ±2% of reading.
Sensing Element
- Ultrasonic sensor shall be designed for continuous submersion in liquids.
- Using the ultrasonic Doppler principle, the sensor shall measure fluid velocities from 0.1 to 10 ft/sec (0.03 to 3.05 m/sec).
- Using ultrasonic echo-ranging principle, the submerged sensor shall measure liquid level from 1' to 15 ft. (25.4 mm to 4.57 m) above the bottom of the pipe or channel. Minimum detectable level shall not be greater than 1' (25.4 mm). Level sensing circuitry shall include a temperature sensor for automatic temperature compensation.
- Sensor shall be constructed of PVC, polyurethane and epoxy.
- Sensor operating temperature shall be from 5°F to 150°F (-15°C to 65°C).
Sensor Connecting Cable
- Provide minimum length 25 ft (7.6 m) tri-coaxial cable with potted bond to the Sensor head. Sensor cable shall be waterproof and electrically shielded. Exposed material shall be polyurethane only.
- Sensor shall include a watertight plug for connection to the instrument electronics.
Logger Electronics
- No calibration shall be required. The Level-Velocity Logger shall measure liquid level from the bottom of the pipe or channel, and flow velocity.
- Logger electronics operating temperature shall be from –5° to 140°F (–20° to 60°C).
- Shall have an isolated RS232 output operating at 28,800 Baud to transfer log files to a Windows™ computer or laptop.
- Provide an LCD bar graph display to indicate level, velocity and temperature readings, plus remaining battery and logger storage capacity.
- Shall be housed in a watertight IP67 enclosure with hinged, latching cover and watertight sensor cable entry.
- Logger capacity shall be 130,000 data points. Each data point includes level, velocity and temperature reading.
- Logger sample rate shall be user-selectable from 10 or 30 seconds, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes.
- Shall be powered by 4 D-cell Alkaline batteries. Battery life shall be matched to Logger storage capacity: 15 days at 10 second sample rate up to 4 years at 30 minute sample rate.
Software
- Shall include Windows™ software to retrieve, display, save and export log files from the Level-Velocity Logger. Shall support Windows versions including 98, 2000, Me, XP, Vista and 7.
- Shall convert level-velocity readings to flow for channel shapes including round pipes, rectangular, trapezoid and egg-shaped channels. Shall convert level readings to flow for flumes and weirs.
- Shall provide 'real-time' communication with the level-velocity logger to display readings with a refresh rate of 10 seconds or less.
- Shall permit the operator to set logging rate of the level-velocity instrument from 10 or 30 seconds, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minutes.
- Shall display battery life remaining and logger capacity remaining.

Shall include 50 ft / 15 m length sensor cable extension with watertight connector plugs to permit sensor installation total distance of 75 ft / 23 m from the electronics enclosure. Cable extension shall be shielded, submersible with a durable polyurethane coating.
