IMUS-p - For Enhanced Pathogen Destruction
Pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites are present in all waste streams. In small quantities, most are not harmful to humans, however, some pathogens are responsible for diseases ranging from the common flu to severe infectious diseases such as pneumonia and septicaemia. Pathogens can often survive in the environment for extended periods, travelling through host-to-host and environment-to-host contact.
Common source materials for harmful pathogens include:
- Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) & wastewater
- Hospital & laboratory waste
- Food processing & kitchen residues
- Livestock waste
- Wastes from slaughter operations
IMUS-p is a patent-pending process that applies a specialized version of IMUS technology targeted at the destruction of the most resistant pathogens. While IMUS can destroy common bacterial and viral pathogens, it is more difficult to destroy prions and toxins. For health and environmental safety, the destruction of such biohazardous materials is crucial.
IMUS-p technology applies the most vigorous digestion conditions possible to ensure complete pathogen and toxin destruction. IMUS-p is suited to waste streams from hospitals, food processing facilities, and certain slaughter facilities where the most dangerous pathogens and toxins frequently present a significant disposal cost.
Highmark is currently researching the capacity for IMUS-p to destroy harmful pathogens and early indications suggest that the specialized system will break down:
- Prions including BSE, scrapie, CWD
- Other biohazardous materials
