Complete algae control solution by using ultrasound
- Sensor package to provide real-time water quality data
- Control algae in lakes, dams and water reservoirs
- Treatment range of 500m/1600ft in diameter
Solar-Powered Algae Control Using Sound Waves
The solution is to anchor one or multiple MPC-Buoy systems that transmit specific ultrasonic parameters depending on the type of algae. Each device can control algae in areas up to 500m/1600ft in diameter.
Algae Control Benefits
Effective algae control
Eliminates up to 90% of existing algae and prevents the growth of new algae using ultrasound technology. Furthermore, the MPC-Buoy allows reduction of TSS, BOD, and chemical consumption.
Safe for the environment
The ultrasound used by LG Sonic is safe for fish, plants, zooplankton, and insects. Our devices use of low power (5-20 Watts), wherefore no high voltage is transmitted into the water.
No release of toxins
The cell wall of the algae remains intact, preventing the release of toxins from the algae into the water.
Effective on larger water surfaces
Each MPC-Buoy device can control algae in areas up to 500m/1600ft in diameter. Multiple buoys can be installed for large water surfaces.
Low operational costs
The system operates autonomously on solar energy and has an integrated Aquawiper to prevent frequent site visits.
Easy to install and maintain
Can be deployed quickly and easily without the need for a crane. The system is easily accessible for maintenance while deployed.
How it Works
The MPC-Buoy is specially designed for large water surfaces and combines online water quality monitoring, web-based software and ultrasound technology to provide a complete and cost-effective treatment against algae in lakes, ponds and drinking water reservoirs.
The concept
1. Monitor Water Quality
The MPC-Buoy provides a complete overview of the water quality by collecting the following parameters every 10 minutes: Chlorophyll α (green algae), Phycocyanin (blue-green algae), pH, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, and Temperature.
2. Predict Algal Blooms
The collected data is delivered in real time via radio, GPRS, or 3G to a web-based software. Based on our developed algorithm we are able to modify the ultrasonic program to the specific water conditions and predict an algal blooms a few days ahead.
3. Control Algae
Based on the received information, the ultrasonic program can be activated according to the water conditions and type of algae present. This way, it is possible to eliminate existing algae and prevent the growth of new algae.

Map Algae Concentrations with Satellite Remote Sensing
Satellite remote sensing technology allows to accurately map the algae distribution in large water bodies.
With the MPC-Buoy, it is already possible to accurately detect algae species in a specific area. By integrating satellite remote sensing it is possible to generate a complete overview of the spatial distribution of algae in large water bodies.
Advanced Water Quality Software
Based on real-time water quality data LG Sonic is able to modify the ultrasonic program to the specific water conditions.
MPC-View software allows users to visually follow the water quality and the progress of the ultrasonic treatment. Our employees receive the same real-time water quality data to verify the current status of the lake, modify the ultrasonic program, and prevent new blooms.
Easy Installation and Maintenance
The MPC-Buoy can be deployed quickly and easily without the need for a crane. The system is easily accessible for maintenance while deployed.
MPC-Buoy and LG Sonic Monitoring are modular units that are easy to assemble and install. Because the construction is light, you only need a small boat to drag the device to the center of the lake, where the unit can be installed and moored.
100% Copper Sulfate Reduction
Four solar-powered algae control buoys were installed in the Canoe Brook Reservoir #1 in Short Hills, NJ to assess the impact of the system for controlling algae and cyanobacteria in the raw water reservoir. The four buoys operated for five months in the spring/summer 2014.
