Penney - Bioreactor for Polyethylene Overpack Drums
As shown in the photographs, our bioreactors are constructed from 95-gallon, polyethylene overpack drums with a gasketed, screw-type cover. Petroleum contaminated water can be circulated through a bioreactor. The vented inlet allows contaminated water to enter the bioreactor and odors to be vented to the outside. The outlet allows oxygenated water and bacteria to drain by gravity to a recharge well or trench.
The water within the bioreactor is constantly aerated with a small, 110 VAC aquarium pump mounted on the cover and an aeration stone at the bottom. Nutrients and substrate can be periodically added by removing the cover. A mat of bacteria usually forms at the surface of the water. Small amounts of recovered heating oil can be added to the bioreactor to promote specific types of bacteria to grow. The bioreactors can be setup as part of a recirculating treatment system to depress the groundwater to allow free-phase oil to be recovered. They are ideal for remediating heating oil spills in basements with shallow groundwater.
