EPSE - Process Flow Technology
The EPSE precipitation technology is simple, fast and cost-efficient. The process is based on the EPSE Chemical and adjustment of pH. The advantages are low operational cost and low investment needs in infrastructure. In the mining industry low operational cost is important, because the volume of waste water of one mine can be as much as up to 300 000 m³/day. The EPSE treatment process is illustrated in the figure above.
Advantages
The major advantages of EPSE technology as a disruptive innovation in treatment of soluble metals are
The EPSE technology is irreversible, while current technologies in use are reversible. For example, with the most common method hydroxide precipitation multimetal solutions are a problem and it is not possible to extract all metals completely. The reason is that the hydroxide method is reversible which means that when pH is adjusted, metals already precipitated will become soluble again. This is a disruptive advantage of the EPSE treatment technology with mining water which contains many harmful metals.

The EPSE technology is effective with almost all metals. Current methods like adsorption are selective and cannot extract several metals at the same time, because several treatments must be applied for different metals with suitable adsorbents. The only metals that cannot be precipitated with EPSE technology are all alkali and partially alkaline earth metals, although their concentration, if necessary, can also be substantially reduced in the same process (by means of chemical complexes).
The EPSE technology removes metals completely and ...
- The EPSE technology removes metals completely and the precipitate is inert and insoluble. Precipitates of soluble metals of all currently used technologies are soluble and thereby hazardous waste. Hazardous precipitate must be stored in controlled landfill deposits and they create an increasing environmental risk globally as well as high costs for mining and waste treatment companies. EPSE precipitate is insoluble and can be stored as inert waste without expensive storage costs and environmental risks.
- The EPSE technology is effective with low and high concentrations of metals. With current technologies low, but still harmful concentrations, cannot be extracted. The EPSE precipitation technology has been successfully tested and used in treatment of industrial waste water with very high metal concentrations and with mining waste waters containing low metal concentrations.
- The EPSE technology process is exothermic. The process generates heat which can be used in mining and treatment of industrial waste for other processes.
- The EPSE inert precipitate can be used as raw material for several applications. The most lucrative use is to extract the valuable and critical metals. In cases where extraction is not economically justified, the precipitate can be used as a raw material. A specific case with high economic value with many applications is the use of the EPSE precipitate in the manufacture of extremely hard and durable concrete.
