ProFish - Infrasound Fish Fence
The infrasound barrier is the world-first technology that led to the birth of Profish in 2007. The result of more than 15 years’ research at the University of Oslo, and validated by numerous publications, the infrasound barrier is now a technology exclusive to Profish. Infrasound systems have in fact demonstrated a strong directed flight reaction in fish, as opposed to other stimuli which totally disorient the fish. All species of fish are sensitive to infrasound; the intensity used in our generator, plus the frequencies emitted (5 – 16 Hz) basically target fish of less than 20 cm.
The first definitive installations and the various tests conducted during the past few years have led us to validate an effectiveness in the order of 80% in cooling water intakes located on rivers. As things stand, this technology cannot generally be applied reliably in the water intakes of hydro-electric plants. An application specific to eels remains at the study stage.
A total of 21 generators are in operation in Belgium and Germany, while 11 are frequently used in testing in Europe and North America.
Infrasound differs from other behavioural barriers in one essential feature: the scientific service that comes with it. Our code of conduct prevents us from selling generators for applications where the expected effectiveness is unknown. Thus, our range of generators in stock makes it possible to verify the potential effectiveness by means of tests carried out in situ.
