PSA - Model 10.025 - Millennium Merlin For Mercury Testing In Solids, Sludges And Liquids
As mercury is present throughout the environment the analyst needs a versatile analyser to be able to measure all forms of this toxic contaminant. Mercury is extremely toxic and harmful to human health. The biodegradable products methyl mercury and dimethylmercury are even more toxic and accumulate especially in fish tissues where they enter the human food chain. P S Analytical have designed the Millennium Merlin for mercury testing in solids, sludges and liquids. The instrument combines the advantages of vapour generation techniques which removes most interference with the sensitivity and selectivity of atomic fluorescence spectrometry. This allows sub ppt detection limits with 107x linearity.
Although the major application is the analysis of mercury in water, we have developed many applications which include environmental samples such as ground water, sea water, drinking water, food stuffs (e.g. milk, fish, rice, vegetables & tea), soils & sludges, biological samples (e.g. urine, blood and hair), industrial samples such as effluent, aluminium, zinc electrolytes, paper, incineration ash, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda, fly ash, sulphur, brine and petrochemical chemical samples including; naphthas, crude oil, condensates, formation waters and other petrochemical products.
Control of the system is via a PC with Millennium software which not only controls the instrument but allows discrete data capture with full integration into user networks and formats.The software records all instrument parameters and calibration graph with the results of each analysis so is excellent for GLP records.
The software has the added advantage of operating two Millennium instruments (Merlin, Excalibur or combination) independently from the same PC thus reducing bench space footprint to a minimum.
The Millennium Merlin is versatile enough to be able to be hyphenated with HPLC systems to allow the user to resolve speciation studies for the highly toxic organo-mercury compounds.
Three versions are available, the standard PSA 10.025 Millennium Merlin with atomic fluorescence detection as described.
A modified unit, the PSA 10.045 with atomic absorption detection for people still using older methods where sensitivity and linearity are less compared to atomic fluorescence detectors.

The PSA 10.035 Millennium 1631 specifically for measurement of mercury in drinking water, which uses vapour generation with atomic fluorescence detection plus an amalgamation facility which reduces detection limits even further.
This unit has the added advantage in that it can be connected to an additional accessory which allows mercury in air samples to be determined.
