The QuickChek SRB Detection System is a rapid enzyme immunoassay method that detects sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). The test employs purified antibodies to detect the enzyme adenosine-5’-phosphosulfonate (APS) reductase which is common to all strains of SRB.

The purified antibodies are attached to small particles that selectively capture the APS reductase enzyme. The particles and captured enzyme are then isolated on a porous membrane, which forms a reactive layer that turns blue in the presence of the APS reductase enzyme.

QuickChek SRB offers several advantages over cell culture techniques for SRB detection including immediate and accurate results. The kit allows testing of solid and semi-solid samples and detects all SRB, including SRB that is unable to grow in some standard media. The test results are not compromised by chemical or salinity interferences that are often found in field samples.

The QuickChek SRB kit is completely self-contained and disposable. Each kit includes all necessary materials to detect and enumerate sulfate reducing bacteria. There is no need for pretreatment or dilution of samples and there are not special hazardous waste disposal limitations.

The QuickChek SRB kit applies the principles of enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to the determination of sulfate reducing bacteria. A lyophilised lysing reagent is reactivated, the sample is filtered through filtration medium, washed and filtered again. The SRB are trapped in a filter cake which is then transferred to the lysing reagent and this will chemically dissolve the SRB cell walls, freeing the APS reductase enzyme. A final filter step is performed, releasing the liquid into the immunoreagent vial containing the lyophilised antibody. The liquid is mixed in the immunoreagent vial and during incubation, the antibody coated particles bind with the APS reductase enzyme. The contents of the vial are then poured onto a test membrane device where the particles are captured. A wash solution is poured over and soaks through the membrane. Once the wash solution has absorbed through the membrans, a chromagen liquid is poured over and soaks through the membrane. After a color incubation period, the membrane color is compared to a color indicator card and SRB concentration is determined.

1. QuickChekTM is accurate

The QuickChekTM test detects all viable and non-viable SRB cells in a sample, even thermophilic SRBs and cells that don’t grow in media because of stress or incubation-temperature limitations. Each batch of test kit reagents is calibrated with pure SRB cells to ensure accuracy. In extensive testing and field use, theQuickChekTM test has never been affected by chemical or salinity interferences.

2. It’s extremely fast

If you have just eight minutes to run a simple test and ten minutes to wait for the color reaction, you can have accurate test results to use right away. You can run two or three tests simultaneously; you can retest immediately. This means you won’t have to return to the site or delay treatment. Use QuickChekTM to measure the effectiveness of your biocide kill. If any bacteria survived, you will know.

3. Simple to run

We’ve made the QuickChekTM test simple to run. Each boxed kit has step-by-step instructions printed right on the packaging. Each Ten-Pak and Economy-Pak also contains a comprehensive User’s Guide featuring additional information and helpful advice.

4. You can enhance the detection limit

QuickChekTM has a standard detection limit of 103 SRB cells/ml. The detection limit for “clean” waters, such as injection waters, can be lowered to 102 or 101 by processing a larger sample of 100 ml or 1 litre, respectively.

5. Totally self contained and disposable

When you pick up a QuickChekTM test kit, you are holding everything you need to detect and enumerate sulfate reducing bacteria. You won’t need syringes because there is no need for serial dilution. Pretreatment is unnecessary; so you won’t need expensive incubators and ultrasonic baths. No sonicators. All you need is the four-ounce kit you are holding. When you are through with a test kit, dispose of it. There are no hazard limitations.

6. No refrigeration required

The freeze-dried reagent in QuickChekTM can be maintained for six months at room temperature with no loss of efficacy. The kits can also withstand freezing temperatures and temperatures of 100oF (38oC) for several weeks. You can confirm kit reactivity using the positive control included in every Ten-Pak and Economy-Pak.

7. Handles solid samples

The new chemical lysing agent in QuickChekTM penetrates solid particles to release the target enzyme, APS Reductase, from the solid mass. You can quantify SRBs in sediment, scale, rust, mud, and biofilms.

8. Economy-Pak for high volume users

If you conduct as many as twenty SRB tests per month, the discounted price of the QuickChekTM Economy-Pak (100 kits) represents a practical way to reduce your cost per test. Our Economy-Pak is easy to store, too. It’s only four inches wider than our Ten-Pak, yet it holds ten times as many test kits.
