Refgas System
The Refgas system uses downdraft gasification technology that is widely accepted as the cleanest and most efficient method of converting biomass and other feedstocks into valuable synthesis gas (syngas), capable of directly fuelling standard engines to generate heat and power (CHP). Refgas’ clever patented processes differentiate it from the competition, and this, added to 7 stages of syngas cleaning and cooling ensures that its product gas is ultra clean and of the highest quality possible.

Syngas
The process is qualified as “Advanced Gasification” and produces a high quality syngas that is currently able to gain double ROCs (in UK), the highest available incentive under the Renewables Obligation legislation.
Typical make up of the syngas is: -
1. Hydrogen | 12 to 17% |
2. Carbon Monoxide | 17 to 21% |
3. Methane | 2 to 4% |
4. Carbon Dioxide | 12 to 17% |
5. Nitrogen | 45 to 54% |
6. Others | 1 to 2% |
Biochar
Depending upon feedstock, the system produces approximately 5% biochar from biomass fuels. This biochar is rich in carbon and is able to be used as a high value soil conditioner or as an alternative fuel.
CHP
The Refgas system uses standard gas engine generators to produce power, meaning that there is also high quality heat available for CHP. This can be converted into 90oC hot water for direct use in district heating or many industrial applications, and is also ideal for use in absorption chillers where the heat can be converted to produce cooling if required. Hot air for drying (e.g. the feedstock) or steam for process use are also options.
Site Requirements
The compact containerised design allows the system to occupy a small footprint, with a 1 MWe unit needing as little as 600m2 (depending upon fuel storage requirements). The gasifier and engines don’t necessarily require their own building and can be easily situated outside, if required. For installation into existing buildings, a minimum height of 9m is required.
Models
Refgas manufactures 2 standard sizes of gasification system: -
The RG1000 unit which can produce up to 1MWe and over 1.2MWth
The RG500 unit which can produce up to 500kWe and over 0.6MWth
For larger applications Refgas supplies multiple RG1000 modules for projects up to 12MWe. The modular approach provides huge flexibility for variable feedstocks, maximum availability through planned maintenance and also allows for modules to be added or taken off line if demand increases or decrease.
