PFR systems are designed to monitor liquid phase reactions within a tank or tube reactor. It is possible to adjust temperature, concentration and flow rate of the mixing reactants. By changing these parameters, the student can observe results and can generate the rate equation for that specific reaction.

In PFR, two or more reactants are continuously pumped through a process line immersed in a thermostatic vessel, to preheat to the reaction temperature at the user adjustable flow rate. The tubular reactor takes place within the same vessel and at the same temperature as the reactants are adjusted. The vessel temperature is increased by electrical heating at the bottom of the reactor and decreased by letting tap water into it. This is achieved by temperature control electronics. Homogeneity of temperature is achieved by speed adjustable stainless steel stirrer.

In the PFR design, as well, the experiment is designed as the student to study the effects of temperature, concentration and residence time of the reactants on the reaction rate. It is possible to get samples intermittently for further analysis of the reaction products. Quenching of reaction is also possible by immediate flow of cold water through the coils in the reactor. Temperature of the vessel is continuously monitored via thermocouple and temperature control electronics.
