Whirlwind Aerators
From Wastewater Treatment
If your wastewater contains fats, oils or floatable solids, the WHIRLWIND induced air flotation unit may provide the solution for their removal. Separating these materials from the liquid will increase treatment plant efficiency and help separate the oils from the water by aiding in their flotation. When you have limited dwell time for oils to float to the surface — the jillions of micro bubbles can be a real boost for getting the oils to the surface where they can be removed by skimming. This one piece of equipment might get you back into compliance. GOT OIL? Get it floating—fast!
Theory Of Operation
The WHIRLWIND unit features a diffuser disc that incorporates fine holes near its edge for ultra-fine bubble diffusion into the liquid. The motor spins the unique diffuser disc, creating a low-pressure zone at the disc’s diffuser ports that draws air or gas from above the liquid surface. That air or gas then proceeds down through the draft tube, into the disc and out of the submerged diffuser ports. As each bubble exits through a hole in the edge of the diffuser disc, the spinning disc shears it into microscopic air bubble fragments measuring from 10-100 microns in diameter. These air bubble fragments adhere to minute solids such as oil and grease. The bubbles slowly rise to the surface around the unit carrying solids along with.
AIRJECTOR Surface Aspirating Aerator
The AIRJECTOR Surface Aspirating Aerator delivers innovative and economical performance in any season. The AIRJECTOR Aerator horizontally mixes all or part of a basin. The large-diameter stationary draft tube with unrestricted air intake helps convert the least amount of energy into the maximum amount of aeration and mixing, giving high oxygen transfer and basin mixing efficiency.
Aeration action goes on below the surface. No spraying or splashing so no odors are produced. Ice build-up is not an issue in cold climate with the unique self-heating design, which keeps the system working all winter long. And because it’s a totally self-contained unit requiring no additional blowers, pumps or mounting platforms, you save capital, installation and operating costs.
Angle adjustment locking bolts allow optimization of horizontal mixing velocities and bubble hang time. Models are available from 2 to 100 horsepower (1.5 - 75.0 kilowatt).

The AIRJECTOR Aerator mounts at an angle in the water with the motor and air intake above the surface and the propeller below. The motor rotates, turning the solid shaft, which spins the propeller. Water moves at a high velocity through and near the propeller blades, creating a low-pressure zone at the hub. The low pressure draws air in through the stationary intake and down the large-diameter draft tube. Air exits into the water at the propeller hub. Turbulence and flow created by the propeller breaks up the air bubbles, mixes the basin and disperses oxygen. Horizontal water movement generated by the AIRJECTOR Aerator maximizes oxygen transfer in three ways: by pulling un-oxygenated water in while pushing oxygenated water away; by minimizing the coalescence of bubbles in the plume; and by driving air bubbles deep below the surface for long bubble hang time.
