SchlammFIT - Sewage Sludge Drying Technology for Sludge Filtration
From Sewage Sludge Drying
SchlammFIT stands for sludge filtration with integrated drying. This system was developed especially for WWTPs up to 15.000 PE. Thereby, liquid sewage sludge with 98 – 95% water content is dehydrated in the SchlammFIT gutter by utilization of the natural gravitation to a dry matter content of 12 – 15%. The SchlammFIT gutter is arranged for draining over the whole hall width after dehydration. With the rotating drum the sludge is distributed in longitudinal direction in the drying hall and dried with the power of the sun to more than 80% solids content by means of the SolarTiger technology. Thus the mass of the sewage sludge is reduced by up to 96%. The SchlammFIT-process requires less than 2 kWh electrical energy per m³ liquid sludge. For this innovative development the patent was granted to us. EP 1 932 810 (AT 504 515 B1).

Why use SchlammFIT®?
If the sewage sludge cannot be utilised in close proximity to the WWTP, the sludge is often dehydrated mechanically before utilisation. On wastewater treatment plants without an own mechanical equipment for dewatering this procedure is often managed by service supply agencies.
In doing so, the dry matter content raises from 2-3% to 20-25% as the water is pressed out of the sludge. This highly polluted water has to be returned to the clarification process.
On wastewater treatment plants which collect their sewage sludge 365 days in a year and dewater it only once or twice a year this often causes considerable operating troubles.
It causes additional loads and sometimes even leads to exceeding the discharge limits required by law. Most wastewater treatment plants are not designed for these additional loads.
SchlammFIT® ensures a continuous dehytration. There are no load peaks and the electrical energy demand is relatively stable.
Functional Principle of SchlammFIT
During the clarification of wastewater sewage sludge is formed due to the nature of the system.
At many wastewater treatment plants the liquid sludge with a water content of about 95-98% is stored until its utilization.
In order to reduce the amount of water and to raise the solid content we have developed the SchlammFIT® system.
Preparation
First, the sewage sludge is pumped from the sludge storage to the drying hall. At the same time it is mixed with conditioning agents in order to enlarge the flakes of sewage sludge.
Loading the SchlammFIT® gutterThe prepared sludge is pumped directly into the SchlammFIT® gutter. This gutter is installed along the whole hall width. A net holds back the sewage sludge and the water drains off through the net. The water flows back into the afflux of the wastewater treatment plant.
Unloading the SchlammFIT® gutter
The automatic filling process takes about 1-2 hours. Afterwards the sewage sludge stays in the 'filter box' until the next day. During this time water flows out of the sludge continuously. After 20-22 hours dwell time the dry matter content has risen to approximately 12-15%. Now the sewage sludge is dumped over the whole hall width.
Spreading and drying
The sewage sludge, which is spread over the width of the hall, is now distributed evenly and lengthwise by the rotation drum which works at the entire width of the hall.
The further drying takes place with the SolarTiger® technology trough the power of the sun.
The final product
With the help of the natural sun radiation the rest of the water is evaporated from the sludge. This is how the sewage sludge dries and at the end of the drying hall it can be collected and stored with a solid content of about 80 %. So the volume of the sewage sludge is reduced by up to 96 %. From 1,000 m3 liquid sewage sludge only 35 tons dry pellets remain for utilisation.
