ShearScout - Low Level Wind Shear Alert System
From Meteorology- Wind Shear Detection Systems
ShearScout is a low level wind shear alert system designed to enhance the safety, regularity and efficiency of aviation in changing wind conditions. Wind shear encounters below an altitude of 1,000ft pose a serious threat to aircraft and may cause dangerous deviations from the intended flight path. The pilot has very little time or altitude to take evasive action. To reduce this threat, ShearScout combines the latest UCAR Phase-3 LLWAS technology and Leonardo system know-how to detect low level wind shear along the runway corridor and issue timely warnings to ATC staff.

Products Details
The Phase-3 LLWAS algorithm was developed for the FAA by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) to detect low level wind shear at US airports. The technology currently serves more than 100 airports in the USA, Europe and Asia.
Integration of wind data from ShearScout® with complementary wind sensors such as weather radar, TDWR and LIDAR provides airports with a complete wind shear alert solution. Integration combines the strengths of each sensor to:
- Eliminate shortfalls in wind shear detection caused by wet and dry weather conditions
- Overcome gaps in coverage of single sensors caused by blockage, clutter, lack of sensitivity or inability to monitor both low and high altitudes.
ShearScout® is available as a stand-alone product or as part of an integrated solution for wind shear detection.
