Air Quality Consulting For Odour
Odour perceptions are - together with noise - the most frequent cause of complaints, as these perceptions can directly be sensed. A proof of evidence of nuisances by odours is mostly not possible on the basis of technical monitoring devices, therefore the human nose is presently the most frequently used 'monitoring device' for nuisances by odours.

Legislative efforts - for example the 'Odour Concentration Guideline' introduced in many German States - lead to a standardization of the procedure to determine and to assess odour concentrations. Together with field inspections - either on the basis of regular grids or leeward of odour sources - numerical models are used to predict odour concentrations.
Lohmeyer Consulting Engineers have an experience of many years in preparing expert advices for agricultural, waste treatment/disposal and industrial plants. We use and include all presently current methods and rules.
- Field inspections for 6 - 12 months on a regular grid
- Field inspections leeward of a odour source
- Calculation of dispersion according to German Odour Concentration Guideline
- Expert advices concerning odour in agricultural plants according to VDI guideline 3471 (pigs) and 3472 (chicken)
For special applications, for example dispersion of odours in valley drainage flows, problem designed modelling or field tracer experiments are executed.
Example: Prediction of the frequency of odour perception for a planned waste dump site under consideration of the local valley drainage flows. The figure displays the frequency of odour perceptions in percent of the time of the year.
We have references for the following classes of business
- Agriculture: Plants to rise and keep chicken, pigs, cattle etc.
- Waste treatment/disposal: Sewage treatment, domestic and hazardous waste landfills, waste transshipping, biological waste treatment, biological waste fermentation, conditioning of recyclables, compost plants, biological soil cleaning plants etc.
- Industry: Refinery, slaughter houses, dryers, sausage production, bitumen coating, paint shops, foundries, roofing card board production, distilleries, powder coating plants, brickyards, breweries, paper mills etc.
- other: City skeleton planning, neighbourhood complaints etc.
Example: Field inspection on a regular grid
Reason of the study: Repeated complaints about odour nuisance in a city district
Problem: In the vicinity exist a lot of odour emitting plants, amoung others a domestic waste landfill, a refinery, a sewage treatment plant and a biological waste treatment plant
Procedure:
- Field inspection on a regular grid according to Odour Concentration Guideline
- 2 periods for the inspection (before and after execution of action plan to reduce emissions of biological waste treatment plant)
- 6 respectively 9 areas of assessment in living district
- For each inspection period 52 inspections per area of assessment
- Briefing of the inspectors concerning the characteristics of the odour perceptions of the involved plants by test inspections
- Differentiation of the odours as caused by specific plants or 'not allocatable'
Frequency of odour perceptions in % of the hours for all allocatable odours. Upper value is before execution of action plan, lower value is after. The red lines indicate the emitting plants.
