Ambient dust sampling
Dust deposit gauges are simple and accurate devices in the measurement of nuisance dust in the local atmosphere. The most widely used and accepted method for dust capture is the Stockholm Environment Institute protocol. This method comprises of a Frisbee-type gauge mounted horizontally on a 1.7 metre tripod with an opaque drain pipe leading from the Frisbee to a rainwater collecting bottle on the ground.
This type of deposit gauge is also fitted with a dry-foam trap to reduce sample contamination from other sources and a nylon bird guard to avoid extraneous contamination.
The sample is collected in the large bottle at ground level by washing the sample through the Frisbee and the foam trap to the bottle. This material is then passed through a pre-weighed filter, conditioned and re-weighed. The sample weight is then achieved which is multiplied by the area of the collecting container, then divided by the exposure period (in days) to give the sample in mg/m2 day. The sample can also be analysed for pH, metals, chemicals and organics if the client requires.
The use of our own weather stations can provide information on the direction of wind and wind speed to obtain the predominant direction of the nuisance dust.
