Aquatic Plant & Habitat Surveys
Effective lake management requires a comprehensive knowledge of of the existing habitat and regular tracking of changes. Surveys are vital for determining broad changes to native plant species composition and detecting nuisance species.
Details:
Depending on the requirements we can perform one of two types of surveys, an AVAS survey or a Point Intercept survey.
AVAS (Aquatic Vegetation Assessment Sites) surveys sample the aquatic plants and habitat along the shoreline. Each species is evaluated to determine its relative percent cover to other species, and sampling transects are marked using differential GPS technology.
Point Intercept surveys sample overall species diversity throughout the lake following a grid of sampling points. At each sampling point the dominant species is recorded and a species distribution map is created. This large number of discrete observations creates a profile on lake-wide species abundance.
Collecting plant data of this type allows us to statistically compare species distribution by season and by year. The results help us to evaluate the effects of watershed, river and lake management activities on the aquatic plant community and to develop potential plant management activities.
