Bio-Based Economy

The Humber remains on track to become the UK’s largest centre for the processing and conversion of biomass, We’re harnessing our natural assets and expertise in agriculture, chemicals and engineering to capitalise on new opportunities in renewable energy. Entrepreneurial businesses are at the forefront of innovation here in the Humber, using natural products from rapeseed to soy and cooking oils, as well as household waste, to generate powe.

Our low lying fertile plains and the low chalk hills that form the stunning Yorkshire Wolds has led to agriculture playing a major role in our economy.
Today, this combined with a skilled workforce and easy access to Europe and a deep port location has led to a significant amount of investment from producers of biofuel - from Greenergy who are the UK’s largest manufacturer of biodiesel to Vivergo Fuels who will be will be one of the largest bioethanol producers in Europe - producing around 1/3 of the UK's biofuel demand for petrol - and the UK's largest single source supplier of animal feed.
This sits alongside a high technology demonstration plant to advance development work on the next generation of biofuels at BP's Saltend Chemical Park near Hull.

Biomass electricity generation
Being on the doorstep of three expanding biomass co-firing power stations presents opportunities for producers of sustainable feedstocks as well as helping to develop skills and new technologies.
These sit alongside entrepreneurial businesses who have developed anaerobic digestion energy generation plants from waste.
Supporting the development of this sector is Humber Chemicals Focus who run capital and business support programmes, network groups including Humber Renewables Network, skills programmes and events aimed at encouraging best practice, and knowledge exchange.
